After Seagems operation, oil field in Espírito Santo is reactivated

Unprecedented subsea pump module removal and installation restored production of over 3,000 barrels per day at the Baleia Anã Field

Seagems has completed a groundbreaking operation in the Espírito Santo Basin that restored productivity to the Baleia Anã Field, one of Brazil’s strategic assets for energy supply. The action involved the removal and installation of a new Pumping Module (MOBO), an essential piece of equipment responsible for transporting oil from the seabed to the surface.

Carried out by the vessel Topázio in September, the operation, performed on behalf of Petrobras, allowed the field to resume production of approximately 3,100 barrels of oil per day, directly contributing to the development of national output and ensuring the continuation of activities in a key region for the sector.

“This operation marks an important milestone for Seagems, not only for its unprecedented nature but also for the significance of its outcome. Restarting production in a field that had been idle for so long demonstrates the confidence we’ve earned and the capability of our team, and of Brazilian engineering, to deliver safe, efficient solutions that meet the highest subsea engineering standards,” says Matheus Peçanha, one of the company’s engineers involved in the project.

The MOBO is an electric pumping system installed on the seabed to assist in oil lifting, but it requires periodic replacement due to its limited lifespan, which averages two and a half years. In addition to reestablishing operations, the replacement performed by Seagems prevented the risk of losing the field concession with Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency (ANP), a significant achievement that highlights the importance of efficient technical management and strong partnerships in the industry.

Beyond its technical results, the project symbolizes the advancement of Brazilian subsea engineering and the country’s growing leadership in a segment historically dominated by foreign companies. Each successful operation reinforces Seagems’ role as a strategic player in the oil and gas industry, ensuring operational continuity, job creation, and energy security for Brazil.

“We always see an opportunity to evolve technically and strengthen our partnership with clients. This delivery demonstrates how the expertise we’ve built over the years enables us to act with agility and precision, even under challenging conditions,” adds Peçanha.
