Malaysian Prime Minister Meets with Seagems Executives

Anwar Ibrahim, who is in Brazil to attend G20 meetings, spoke with company executives about the business landscape in the oil and gas sector

Last Sunday (17th), Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, attended two meetings where he discussed business and market prospects in the oil and gas sector with executives from Seagems, a Brazilian company specializing in subsea engineering solutions.

The first event, titled “Roundtable Meeting with Brazilian Captains of Industry,” was held at the Windsor Barra Hotel in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro (RJ). It brought together Brazilian and Malaysian business leaders from various sectors. The meeting was attended by Seagems‘ Chief Financial Officer, Edmundo Falcão. The purpose of the gathering was to foster high-level discussions with Brazilian companies, focusing primarily on investment opportunities, partnerships, and strengthening trade relations. Following this, a more intimate dinner took place, during which two other executives from the Brazilian company participated: Flavio Alves (Legal Director) and Ricardo Bicudo (COO).

Also present were representatives from Sapura Energy, who, like the Prime Minister, traveled from Malaysia to Brazil — a journey of around 30 hours by flight. The connection between Seagems and Malaysia stems from Sapura Energy, which, together with Paratus Energy Services Ltd., holds the controlling stake in Seagems‘ operations.

According to Edmundo Falcão, CFO of Seagems, the meeting was highly productive, providing a more comprehensive overview of the Brazilian market and strengthening ties with a country that is so significant to the company’s activities. „The meeting with the Malaysian Prime Minister was a unique, enriching, and stimulating opportunity. He emphasized a strong intention to strengthen commercial ties with Brazil and reaffirmed the vision of mutual collaboration between the two nations. The exchange of ideas and perspectives made it very clear that there is potential for new strategic partnerships that can and will benefit both countries,” stated the executive.

Anwar Ibrahim visited Brazil to participate in the G20 meetings held on November 18th and 19th in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro, and Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira. Also present were Special Advisor Celso Amorim and Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce, and Services, Márcio Elias Rosa.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia stated that this is his first visit to Brazil and highlighted the positive economic moment in his country for new business opportunities. Ibrahim also praised the presence of Malaysian companies in Brazil, such as the oil producer Petronas.

Lula and Ibrahim discussed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, which Brazil launched during the G20. The leaders supported bilateral and international efforts to promote a just and equitable energy transition, taking into account the national circumstances of developing countries and their contributions to achieving the global goal of the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC. They also recognized the importance of biofuels in decarbonizing the mobility and transport sectors in developing countries and commended progress in bilateral energy initiatives, agreeing to maintain ongoing contacts regarding cooperation in the renewable energy sector.

Lula and Anwar Ibrahim supported efforts to develop bilateral collaboration in the semiconductor sector through the growing dialogue among governments, the private sector, and research, development, and innovation institutions of both countries, reaffirming the benefits of an exploratory, horizontal, and collaborative approach aligned with the industrial policies of both nations.
