Seagems recognized by Petrobras in an award that selects the best innovations in subsea technology

The award final featured four projects, three of which were from Seagems. The winning project was the Above Worktable Centralizer, a device that automates offshore maneuvers, providing greater safety for employees.

Seagems, a Brazilian company specializing in subsea engineering solutions, has just been recognized in the 2024 edition of the Petrobras Technology Incorporation Award in Subsea Installations. In the final stage of the competition, four projects were in the running, three of which were from Seagems. The winning technology was the “Above Worktable Centralizer”, a robotic arm capable of performing flexible pipe centralization maneuvers on the worktable, reducing employee exposure and improving ergonomics during the task.

The goal of this innovation is to automate the operation of centralizing flexible pipes on the PLSV (Pipe Laying Support Vessel) worktable, a vessel used for the laying and retrieval of pipes, connecting wells and Floating Production Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs) to oil extraction systems. With the technology developed by Seagems, it is possible to reduce employee exposure to potential risks, decrease the use of auxiliary winches and the number of tensioned cables on the worktable, as well as ensure better ergonomics for employees during the operation. Among Petrobras’ specifications for participation in the award, one of the main criteria was the Accident Prevention Potential (APP).

The award was presented to the Engineering and Operations team in a ceremony held in Rio de Janeiro on October 10. “Innovation is in Seagems’ DNA, which seeks to grow collaboratively by incorporating solutions that ensure the safety of those involved in our operations, especially in offshore activities, where risks are higher. We are a dedicated and committed team striving to deliver the best for our clients. We are driven by challenges, and I am very happy to see Petrobras’ recognition in these projects we competed for. Petrobras’ trust in our work reinforces our commitment to ensuring efficient operations and confirms that we are on the right path, moving towards an increasingly innovative and safe company,” says Alexandro Pereira, Operations Leader Engineer.

In addition to the winning technology, another finalist solution from Seagems was the “Clamp Tool,” responsible for the recovery of flexible pipes without a pull head or that have been cut, operated remotely via ROV. The “Vertical Connection Module (VCM) Tipping Table,” another innovation that made it to the final, is used in the operation of connecting the VCM to the flexible pipe, ensuring greater operational safety and reducing employee exposure.
