Sustainable initiatives carried out in partnership with Sirí collect 328 kg of recyclables during the event; glass accounts for the largest share, with 59% of the total
The 21st edition of the Rio das Ostras Jazz & Blues Festival, held from June 19 to 22, featured a strong commitment to sustainability. Initiatives led by Seagems, a Brazilian company specializing in underwater engineering, resulted in the collection of 328.6 kg of recyclable materials, with glass representing the majority (59.4%), followed by plastic (26.8%), paper (10%), and metal (3.7%). According to a survey conducted at the venue, 93.5% of attendees reported correctly sorting their waste throughout the four-day event, helping to prevent the emission of 405.4 kg of CO₂.
The initiative, carried out in partnership with the environmental organization Sirí, focused on reducing the festival’s carbon footprint, which attracted over 100,000 people and featured both national and international artists. Public engagement was encouraged through educational activities, reusable cup distribution, interactive exhibits, and real-time dashboards displaying waste collection data.
“Sustainability is not just about neutralizing environmental impacts — it’s about sparking real behavioral change. By bringing initiatives like this to a cultural event of this magnitude, we’re able to combine purpose, visibility, and transformation. The result goes far beyond numbers: it’s seen in the awareness we raise, the community’s involvement, the recognition of waste pickers, and the legacy we leave for the city,” says Glaucia Maciel, HR Director at Seagems.
The waste sorting operation was carried out with the support of waste pickers and environmental agents from Sirí and the Rio das Ostras city government, at a hub set up in the camping area on Av. Gov. Roberto Silveira. All materials were weighed and sent for proper recycling. As part of the initiative’s educational aspect, the public was also invited to observe the process.
At the end of the festival, a cleanup drive was also organized at Lagoa do Iriry, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Local residents and volunteers joined in to collect and sort waste, leaving behind a message of environmental preservation for the community.

These initiatives are part of Seagems do Bem, a permanent, autonomous corporate committee created to promote social and environmental impact actions both inside and outside the company. Made up of employee volunteers, the group leads internal awareness campaigns, supports incentive law–funded projects, and engages with communities in the regions where Seagems operates.
Held annually in Rio das Ostras, Rio de Janeiro, the festival features free concerts by major Brazilian and international artists. The 2025 edition included performances by Alfredo Rodríguez (Cuba), José James (USA), Mike Stern, Coco Montoya, Mitch Woods, JJ Thames, OZMA French Explosive Jazz (France), Amaro Freitas, Rodrigo Suricato, Banda Black Rio, Rosa Marya Colin, and other national talents.
