Initiative developed in partnership with the Center for Business Psychology (CEPEM) highlights the importance of emotional health during “White January.”
Seagems starts the year by launching the Emotional Education Program, aimed at enhancing emotional well-being and safety in the workplace. The initiative was developed in partnership with the Center for Business Psychology (CEPEM), a pioneer in corporate psychology and specialized in projects for the oil, gas, and energy sectors. As a strategic partner, CEPEM will deliver lectures—including onboard vessels—produce informational booklets, and provide technical and advisory support to meet employee needs.
This initiative aligns with Seagems’ ongoing commitment to promoting employees’ physical and mental health and is launched during White January, an international movement encouraging reflection and action in support of emotional well-being. The program is structured into four modules addressing anxiety, stress, depression, and creating a healthy work environment.
The life of an offshore professional presents unique challenges. On Seagems’ vessels, designed to ensure crew quality of life, professionals benefit from comfortable environments equipped with gyms, game rooms, cable TV, and high-quality meals. Safety is further ensured by well-equipped infirmaries. However, despite advancements in offshore infrastructure, the lifestyle still requires personal sacrifices, such as missing significant family events and celebrations.
To mitigate these challenges, in addition to the new Emotional Education Program, Seagems offers several psychological support initiatives:
- Oriente-me Platform: Provides access to specialized professionals for psychological assistance, available 24/7 to both employees and their families.
- Happiness Pulse: A quarterly mechanism that evaluates employees’ emotional well-being, aiding in the continuous monitoring of mental health.
- Social Assistance Support: Seagems offers specialized social assistance services to support employees and their families with necessary formalities. Employees or their beneficiaries can contact the HR department or the social assistant for assistance.
For Raquel Rocha, psychologist and Human Resources Coordinator at Seagems, the new program underscores the company’s commitment to holistic employee well-being. “This program reflects how the company values each employee as a unique individual, recognizing that emotional health is just as important as physical health. It symbolizes our culture of ‘caring for one another’ and building a more human, welcoming, and productive work environment. What’s most inspiring about this project is its focus beyond organizational goals, showing genuine concern for employees’ well-being,” Rocha highlights.
The Importance of Emotional Health Initiatives
Josenildo Rodrigues, Psychology Coordinator at CEPEM, emphasizes that caring for employees’ emotional health is essential. “Our partnership with Seagems represents a strong commitment to the emotional well-being of its employees, covering both onshore and offshore teams. The themes chosen for the emotional education cycles were carefully planned to address specific needs and contribute to well-being. The program’s practical approach, aligned with professionals’ realities, underscores the relevance of this initiative and highlights the value of the partnership in creating a healthier and more productive work environment,” Rodrigues adds.
The program also aligns with Seagems’ Adding by Subtracting philosophy, which aims to simplify processes to enhance productivity and quality of life for employees. The company continuously reviews its processes, leveraging advanced technologies, including AI solutions. Through this program, Seagems seeks to optimize workloads, streamline daily routines, and foster continuous internal process improvement while encouraging the adoption of the ESSA methodology (Eliminate, Standardize, Simplify, Automate).
In 2024, the company was recognized in the 2024 Best Companies to Work For™ Rio de Janeiro ranking, organized by Great Place to Work (GPTW) Brazil, achieving 13th place among large companies. This marks the sixth consecutive year Seagems has earned GPTW recognition. Additionally, the company was honored with a national award for Emotional Health Excellence.
Focus on People
Seagems currently employs 1,045 professionals across its vessels and three offices (Rio de Janeiro, Rio das Ostras, and Vienna). Over the past 10 years, the company has facilitated more than 2,500 promotions and career advancements for its internal professionals, who have collectively completed over 1 million hours of training. Notably, 45% of offshore employees working at Seagems today were internally trained to assume their roles.
Over the past 10 years, Seagems has achieved 3,319 days without accidents or incidents, equivalent to more than 91% of working days being classified as perfect days. This commitment is reflected in the company’s low employee turnover, with nearly 50% of its workforce having been with the company for over six years.
“We strive to ensure that our employees are well, both physically and mentally. Our history is marked by the implementation of modern processes that guarantee workplace safety. Since 2019, we have been annually certified as a Great Place to Work by GPTW, consistently ranking among the best companies to work for in the state of Rio de Janeiro,” confirms Glaucia Maciel, Seagems’ HR Director.
